Home Away From Home....Candy!
Before I get to the photo, let me suggest this nice day out from Coventry by train. In just 30 minutes you can be in Birmingham (sometimes referred to as England's second city. It is a big place.) The train takes you past Birmingham International Airport and across pretty countryside before arriving in the City Centre. A comfortable walk and you are in Bullring Shopping Centre where you will find fabulous stores and best of all Selfridges, a huge department store. And what does Selfridges sell? LOTS and LOTS of American Candy. It isn't cheap but a lot cheaper than an airfare to our nearest USA store. There is plenty of selection but my favourites are here - I think I will have a Baby Ruth or two or three :). Gradually, American treats are finding their way to the UK. I am happy.
Did you watch the Academy Awards? How exceptionally nice that I just happened to wake up at 1.30 am, slid out of bed quietly and put the 'telly' on downstairs. I am happy with most of the results and so glad we saw many of the movies. I was back in bed at 5 am and got up a tad later than normal. If you watched the show, hope you enjoyed it too!
So that is what's happening here, check out Our World Tuesday to see more photos from other Cities.
Tomorrow it is back outside in the cold, cold, cold!

And I thought Baby Ruths were universal!
Looks like snack time to me. The awards? Saw most of the movies and was glad that Amour won at least one award but should have received more. Argo was a good movie but I think that Lincoln was better and certainly Beast of the Southern Wild was a Masterpiece as was Life of Pi. Good pr and unrelenting publicity accomplished for Argo what the others did not...a distinctive advantage for them. All in all, it was pretty good...not a bad year. Always love the gowns and giggle over some of them as well as the hairdos!
I could use a Butterfinger right now!
Fun shot. Happy Tuesday. ☺
RamblingRound - I certainly wish they were :).
Kate - I don't know if you know but Emmanuelle Riva got the British Academy Award for Best Actress a couple of weeks ago. Like your summary of it all...I still have about 3 films to see. Wasn't going to bother with Life of Pi (read the book) but now I will go and see it!
Dana - :).
So glad you got to see the awards, live! FYI, my favorite there is that Butterfinger! :-)
In my home away from home, it doesn't seem to matter where I am, I photograph gardens or find the poetry. Whatever makes a home base when travelling allows you to travel longer.
That's so funny, because here in Pasadena I drool over the English sweets at Fresh & Easy. Cadbury's Flake! Crunchie! Rolos! KitKat! Cadbury's chocolate made with real chocolate, not the Herschey kind! On the other hand, if I ever move back to England, I'll have to take sacks of Butterfinger with me.
Adele - Butterfingers are really hard to find.
Bellis - How funny! I've been living here for nearly 40 years and I still miss certain foods and get so excited when I see them in the stores here. But, Cadbury's is pretty darn special, I'll give you that :). Now I am wondering if you are from England???
Pearl...I feel like I am on vacation every day (and being retired helps a tad).
Hooray, you caught the awards! I followed along via the NYTimes live coverage, which was incomplete viewing but fun (lots of sardonic commentary:). I love Selfridge's for their selection of food items - this one's excellent! I actually passed through the area for a quick moment over Xmas, it was a cold rainy day or -surprise!:)
I have a sweet tooth, but have never tried any of the candy on display here. What would you suggest as the first one to try?
I want to pick one right now!
i often find myself craving a Snickers ... nuts and chocolate .. two things i love together ... i went to sleep at 11 pm i was too too too tired and quite over all the musical numbers .. gimme award presentations not overly long introductory monologues ... it was as if it was the Seth McFarland show there for the first 30 min .. yawn
My favorite, if you ever get the chance, is the Skor bar. Butterfingers and Reese's and Milky Way & Kit Kats are all wonderful too, though. And I love Junior Mints!
We don't have television, so I am completely out of the loop on the award shows.
Deb - I recommend them all :) !!!! But Baby Ruth is my favourite.
Amanda - You are not the only one not to have a TV...lucky you. There is hardly anything on to see most of the time :). I will keep and eye out for Skor bars!
Daryl - I missed the first 30 minutes the first time
around...that may have been a good thing. I e-mailed you about See Candies. If they ever sell that here I will honestly feel as if I have died and gone to heaven...ha ha!
Interesting you can't easily find Baby Ruths there. I hope you stocked up! Awhile ago, this would've been my kind of snack. But, alas, no more. I've been off all sugar (even fruit) for almost a year. The rare times I go to the movies I miss indulging in chocolate.
Wow, that looks exactly like a candy display here in the states.
One of these days I'm going to donate my telly to a charity and good riddance! If it wasn't for Coronation Street (I know how corny is that!) it would be gone already...maybe!,
SRQ - For whatever reason, well done. Not an easy tasks to give up sweets.
Linda - Your displays will be millions of times larger than the ones here :).
PerthDP - That sounds drastic :). Our daughter in OZ watches Coronation Street. I think you aren't very far behind the UK shows. Enjoy!
