Spot The Difference

Earl Street, Coventry
The Earl of Mercia (centre) and Coventry Council House (right)

The photo above was taken last week and
the one below was taken May, 2015.

The bridge was removed in late April, 2017.
The link bridge was constructed in 1970 to
connect the historic council house
to civic centre buildings to the left.

PS.  The building in the middle, straight ahead, is a pub :).

Around Coventry Cathedral Ruins

Bayley Lane, Coventry

I thought it might be fun to identify some of the historic buildings
located in the City Centre from this vantage point up the
Old Cathedral Tower.  See the 'key' below.
The truck is turning into St Mary Street.  More on that tomorrow.

In the Cathedral Quarter there are some
wonderful buildings that survived World War II.
The area where the museum stands was destroyed in the war.

Note from Lauren:
I took this photo in 2013.  It pretty much looks like this today.
If you are interested in seeing more of
any of these places, click on the 'labels' below.

Tiles

Council House, Earl Street
Bird's-eye view of internal courtyard taken
from Coventry Cathedral Spire Tower.

I have visited the Council House many times but
I have never seen those tiles until now.

Below is the front of the Council House.
You can see the tip of the Cathedral Spire beyond.
I wasn't up that high to take my shot :).

Another Look

Earl Street, Coventry

This photo was taken yesterday afternoon
after I published my blog post. I like it.
The bridge over the road goes from the Council House
to Committee rooms on the left.  The committee rooms and bridge
are to be demolished soon.

By the way, Council House here is the name used for
the building serving as headquarters for local government offices -
kind of like the term 'City Hall' used in America.

Have a good weekend!!

Council House Square

Junction at Earl Street, Little Park Street & High Street
A look at Coventry architecture from 1875.

This is the newly completed Council House Square.
Construction of the Council House (right) began in 1913.
The building in the centre was a furniture shop in 1875 and is now
a small grocer store with apartments above.
The building to the left is a pub, but opened
as a bank in 1896.

The photos (above and below) show the
view of Council House Square from the
Council House steps. There is a mixture of new
and old architecture.

I think this new redeveloped area outside the Council House
looks very nice.  I guess the important thing here is to enjoy
it while it lasts.  A lot of the buildings in the photo (immediately above)
are to be knocked down soon.  Oh dear...more changes.

In the meantime, let's zoom in on those flowers....

...oh, and one more photo of the Council House.

See you tomorrow!

Benchmark

Council House, Coventry
(constructed 1913 - 1917)

I noticed this mark in the sandstone at the front of Coventry's
Council House and for ages thought it was a stonemason's mark or signature.
I was wrong.

Turns out that this is a 'benchmark'. If you follow the
link, you will probably understand better than I
what this surveyor's mark is all about.

Council House Square

The construction trucks are gone, grass is down and
please do note some blue sky too.

I'm thinking that the photo above of the landscape outside Coventry's Council House
is a vast improvement over how things looked earlier in May (below).

It's Monday and I am back.  It is going to be a slow
process getting back into the blogging routine.  I've
got plenty of photos to share, some from our trip to the States.
Take care all.  See you tomorrow!
PS I'll add a couple more shots below.
It looks like this is going to be a busy spot.

Not A Pretty Picture

Today's posting is just a little of information about
what is happening for those of you familiar with Coventry.
Basically, we have plenty of road changes taking place.

That is the Council House in the center of the top shot
and the building with the tall tower in the photo below.

I'm standing in Earl Street at Much Park Street.
Have a look in both directions :).

Well, at least it is not raining.

St. Mary Street, Coventry

This is the view from Coventry Cathedral, Bayley Lane gate.  We are looking down St. Mary Street with Drapers Hall to the right and the Council House to the left.
