Organ Pipes

Coventry Cathedral
Organ Pipes and Reflecting Light

Coventry Cathedral's organ is a gift from the people of Canada.
I have heard the organ music and I can't wait to hear it again.

The pipes (above) play an integral part of the cathedral design.
The light on the wall passes through huge stained-glass windows.

This is a sad day.
News of terrorist attacks in Brussels is heartbreaking.

Snapshots of Coventry Cathedral

Following on from my blog posts on Wednesday and Thursday,
I am concluding with a few more images
that stood out during my recent visit.

Ceiling
The rib vaulted ceiling hides the natural roof.

Chapels
There are four small chapels within the Cathedral.
Below are the entrances to two of them.

Chapel of Christ the Servant

Chapel of Christ in Gethsemane

Windows
The placement and design of the windows is breathtaking.
The West Screen (below) is enormous.

Below - The Nave Stained-Glass Windows left
and The West Screen to the right.

The Baptistry Window (below)

Coventry Cathedral is a modern building
that I really didn't appreciate to the full
until I put together this collection of photographs
over the last 3 days.

Have a good weekend :).

Sutherland Tapestry

Coventry Cathedral
'Christ in Glory'
Tapestry Designed by Graham Sutherland

Woven in France and completed in 1962.
It took about 10 weavers over a year to complete.
The looms were made from 2 large tree trunks.
There are over 900 colors.

I think it is fair to say that the
tapestry is the first thing you
notice when you enter the Cathedral.
It certainly dominates the interior when you face it.

The next photograph was taken in the
Lady Chapel which is located
right below the tapestry.

The dimensions are 75 feet by 38 feet (23m x 11m)
It is about the size of a tennis court.
From where I was standing to take photograph above,
when I turned around this is what I could see:

This is a similar photo to the one I showed yesterday but this one
is taken with a flash.  Hidden from view (by the
sculpture) is the engraved West Screen windows located at the
other end of the Cathedral and the Baptistry Window.
I will show you those tomorrow.
You must see the ceiling too as well as
a couple of the adjoining chapels.

The Great Nave Windows

Coventry Cathedral
Designed by Sir Basil Spence

I'm standing behind the High Alter.
The small cross of nail (set within the sculpture)
is the original Cross of Nails formed from 3 medieval nails
found in the rubble of the old Cathedral roof
after its destruction in World War II.

You will only see this view of the full stained-glass nave windows
when you reach the far end of the nave and look back.

Below is how one set of the Nave Windows looks from outside.

When you walk into the Cathedral your
attention is initially drawn to the
Graham Sutherland Tapestry.
More about that tomorrow.

For now, notice that The Great Nave Windows
are hidden from view as you
enter Coventry Cathedral.

Sunshine

The Baptistry Window
Coventry Cathedral

I walked into Coventry Cathedral on Wednesday
and was astonished how the sunlight hit
the stained glass windows to my right.

I shared photos of this window two years ago and
feel it is 'ok' to show it again today.

I will show more of this window again next week.
For now, notice the man walking past the window on the left (below).
That will give you an idea of the size of this wall of light.

Yesterday, a kind neighbour of ours passed away and
I also learned of the tragic death of one of our
City Daily Photo family, Tina Forrester, and her husband.
It was a sad day.

For today, I would just like to say, 'Happy Birthday, Mom'.
Her middle name was 'Sunshine'.

St Michael and the Devil

Coventry Cathedral
Priory Street

Bronze Statues Sculpted by Sir Jacob Epstein

Mounted in 1960 on the main wall near the New Cathedral entrance.
Coventry Cathedral was rebuilt next to the Old Cathedral Ruins
after the devastation of the Blitz in 1940.

The sculpture depicts Archangel Michael standing over
the Devil in triumph
from the story of the angel rebellion in the
Book of Revelations.

These photographs were taken today
using my iPhone.

Below is an old 2014 image which
shows the Old and New Cathedrals
so you can see the ruins (left) and new Cathedral (right).

City Daily Photo Theme Day - Shop Window

Holy Trinity Church
This one of the views you can see right outside the 'shop window'
I am using for today's theme day post.

It is located in St Michael's Avenue right between
Coventry Cathedral ruins and the new Coventry Cathedral.
(see below)

The Cathedral Shop sells books, gifts and
you can purchase refreshments like coffee and tea too.
Step outside and you'll see Holy Trinity Church to your left, ...

...and look the other way, you'll see the entrance to the New Cathedral (below).

1962 Penny

Coventry Cathedral

Above is one of many 1962 pennies embedded in the floor
marking the processional routes used by the choir and clergy
at Coventry Cathedral (below).

The reasons the coins are dated 1962?
That is the year the New Cathedral was consecrated.
Many of the coins now look like the one below.

Photographs were taken last month
with my handy mobile phone.

The Chapel of Christ In Gethsemane

Coventry Cathedral

This photograph is taken from the corridor outside this beautiful chapel.
The sign below explains more about the inspiration and design.

I am in the midst of a little blogging break but I
couldn't help share this beautiful chapel located inside
Coventry Cathedral.

Hope to be back mid April.
You all take care.

The Charred Cross

Old Coventry Cathedral Ruins

As you can see, The Charred Cross in the Old Cathedral is
a replica.  The actual cross is kept inside the
New Cathedral (below) for safekeeping.
Click the link HERE
to see the original Cross of Nails.

I visited here yesterday and found
this quiet spot right at the back of the
Cathedral where The Charred Cross is displayed
and Books of Remembrance can be found nearby.

Happy Birthday, Mom xx

Old And New

The Old Cathedral is to the left and the
new Cathedral is to the right
(with a little restoration work being carried out in between).

Taken yesterday fairly early.

The Baptistry Window

Coventry Cathedral
195 Panels of Stained Glass

In the photo below you can get an idea of the size of this window if you focus in on the
door (left) and reception desk (right).  This is one very large collection of stained glass panels.

I will have to come back and try photographing
this window again.  Would love to capture the glass in the middle
looking less washed out.  A challenge.

G Is For Glass

Baptistry Window, Coventry Cathedral
Designed by John Piper and made by Patrick Reyntiens

I am only showing one third of the window today.  I will show you more on another day.

The boulder in front of the window originates from a hillside at
Bethlehem and has been fashioned into a font.

Not far away is a quiet spot where candles can be lit
and memories recalled.  I did that today.

City Daily Photo Theme Day - Looking Out

From inside the Coventry Cathedral looking out of
The Great West Window
to the Cathedral ruins beyond.

The Screen of Saints and Angels window was created by John Hutton.
(The link is excellent if you are interested in reading more.)

The photo on the left (below) is taken from inside the new Cathedral
and the one on the right is taken from inside the Cathedral ruins toward the new Cathedral.

The shot below is my favorite.  Every time I
turned around there were groups of children having
a school day out to see and learn about Coventry's history.

The only thing missing here for me is a bit of sunshine.
I'm sure you will find plenty of that if you
have a look at other participants in
