Rock 'n' Roll with Elvis

No, this isn't Elvis photographed here.  

 This is Ben Portsmouth (from the UK)

performing as Elvis Presley in his show,

'The King Is Back'.

 I feel so lucky to have seen Elvis Presley

perform twice in Hawaii many years ago.

The show at the Belgrade Theatre brought back happy memories.

 In August, 2012, Ben Portsmouth made history when

he won the 'Worldwide Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist'

contest in Memphis.  He is the only artist from

outside the USA to win this title.

 We enjoyed the show!

So here's my take on 'Rock and Roll' Theme -

This sculpture is by WC Marshall, mid 19th Century.

The Oriel window dates between 1394 and 1414.

It was rebuilt in 1826 and later restored in 1893.

I posted this photograph in September, 2012, and

thought is was perfect for today's theme day topic.

Sir Frank Whittle

Inventor of the Turbojet Engine

1907 - 1996

Sir Frank Whittle, a British Pilot, born in Coventry

designed and patented the first turbojet engine in 1930.

Millennium Place, Coventry

This statute of  Sir Frank Whittle was unveiled in Coventry

on what would have been the 100th birthday

of this great inventor from Coventry.

Above the statute is the 'Whittle Arch' -

described as a twin-arch tubular structure.

Below you can see more of the Whittle Arch.

The blue structure is a walkway, called 'The Glass Bridge'.

You can just make out the statute in front of the bus.

There is plenty of construction going on in Coventry too.

More university student accommodation, I am told.

Chess Anyone? That's the scene now.  

Quite different (I expect) to 

how it must have looked when

Chuck Berry recorded 'My Ding-a-Ling' right here

in 1972.  

In 1986 the library opened in premises that were formerly 

the Locarno ballroom and later Tiffany's night club.

Happily, there are some signs on display to share some of

the heritage of what is now a very quiet and peaceful library.

Hello all!

This photograph was taken on

a very nice warm sunny day earlier this month.

We had a super vacation.  I'm now busy working on a number

of projects and hope to get back blogging soon.

To my friends at CDP, I have missed you!

When I had a look to see what the theme was for this month,

I decided to join in with the image above of me and my husband.  

I'm amazed that I didn't drop my iPhone :).

I think the Park Rangers call it something like

'the tree with many noses'.

It wasn't until this morning at Coombe that I came up with an 

idea for today's Theme Day blogpost.  

Next job is to find out what kind a tree this really is???

City Daily Photo Theme Day - Where I Belong

On the first day of each month City Daily Photo bloggers participate in a
Theme Day.  The topic today is 'Where I Belong'.

For me, the answer is 'in and around Coventry, England'.

It is where I am, and I'm making the most of it.
Like last Wednesday.  The sun was out and my husband
and I went into town and joined a tour of the ruins of
Coventry's first Cathedral founded in the 12th century.

Ruins of St Mary's Priory and Cathedral 

This walkway goes around the edge of what
was the nave of the former Cathedral.

The timber building (left) is 15th century Lychgate House and
the stone building ahead (and below) is the former Blue Coat School.
The scene is historic.

The tour lasted 30 minutes. I can show
more of it soon.  Tomorrow, I'm going
to show some photos inside the new Coventry Cathedral.

Today is City Daily Photo Theme Day -

Scenes from Cafés or Coffee Houses

I have chosen a place we visit more than
once a week - located in beautiful Coombe Country Park.

From the car park you will see the Visitors Centre

(and, if you follow this blog, you'll recognise the

'oak tree' I photograph often on the left in the distance
in a Tree Series).

The entrance to Herons Café  is just inside the

Visitors Centre on your right (below).

We were there yesterday after a long walk around the park
in the rain. We always stop here for hot chocolate or coffee.
If you fancy something more substantial, you can choose from
a full menu.  Everyone is friendly and helpful too!

All warm now, so back to the car.
(That's my husband standing there with the red 'brolly'.)

City Daily Photo Theme Day - Shop Window

Holy Trinity Church

This one of the views you can see right outside the 'shop window' 

I am using for today's theme day post.

It is located in St Michael's Avenue right between

Coventry Cathedral ruins and the new Coventry Cathedral.
(see below)

The Cathedral Shop sells books, gifts and

you can purchase refreshments like coffee and tea too.

Step outside and you'll see Holy Trinity Church to your left, ...

...and look the other way, you'll see the entrance to the New Cathedral (below).

City Daily Photo Theme Day - Curiosities

Coventry Cathedral Ruins

Restoration work to waterproof the under crofts of the old cathedral
has revealed one particular memorial stone that I'm quite curious about.

To get a birds-eye view of the whole project,
it was up the Cathedral Tower for me today.

1st September, 2015
The flag stone floor on the left has been
lifted to reveal a floor made up of memorial stones, some dating back to
the 18th century.

St Michael's Church was a 14th Century Gothic church that
was later designated a cathedral.  During WWII the Cathedral was bombed
leaving a shell of the building which remains today.

Below is a sequence of photos which show a
little of the archaeological discoveries.

17th July, 2015

You can see in the photo above, work has started.

The original floor hasn't been seen for 75 years.

31st July, 2015

What I hadn't noticed on my first visit was

that memorial stone sticking out from underneath the floor.

When I looked at the photo I took on the 17th July, 

the stone was covered with a piece of wood (middle of photo).

7th August, 2015

You can just see that memorial stone

 on the right hand side of the photo (above).

19th August, 2015

More exposure of the stone over what is now thought to be

a concealed crypt.

Today 

I could see the whole memorial stone
although I struggle to make out all the words.
I think it is for 3 people, the first
being Thomas Allen who died in 1761
at the age of 41.

This is a big story and I have only
touched on my own curiosity of one particular memorial stone.
I will be back later this week with more.
In the meantime, why not visit other members of

City Daily Photo Theme Day - Bicycle

Coventry Transport Museum

1879 Lawson Bicyclette made in Sussex (front)

and

1885 Rudge Penny Farthing made in Rudge Factory, Crow Lane, Coventry (back)

Coventry is the birthplace of the British Cycle and Motor industry.

In 1888 Rover Safety Bicycle (below)

was made by John Kemp Starley's Rover Company in Coventry.

This bicycle is considered to be the first modern bicycle

and is one of the most important inventions of the past 200 years.

As you can see, Coventry Transport Museum 

has a comprehensive collection of bicycles.

The museum is free and you can spend as much time as 

you like looking at the bicycles as well as

everything you ever wanted to know about 

Coventry's rich motor industry.

I couldn't leave out these bright

red wheels on the velocipede (below)
known in Britain as the
'Boneshaker' because it was so uncomfortable to ride.

I've visited the museum many times and used one of their 

displays in CDP's 'Revolution' Theme Day back in May.
