75 Years On

Coventry Cathedral Ruins
Today is the 75th Anniversary of
the bombing of Coventry Cathedral during a
devastating WWII eleven hour bombing raid on Coventry.

The photo above shows life in the Cathedral ruins today.
People visit, children play and many take hundreds of photographs are taken.

If you would like to read more about the Coventry Blitz,
see paragraph headed '14th November 1940' in the link HERE.

Around the corner from the Cathedral Ruins (in Hay Lane)
are some photographs of the Cathedral in 1930.
They are on display by permission of the Coventry History Centre,
The Herbert Museum & Art Gallery.
Have a look:

What a grand place it must have been.
I love to tell people that my husband's parents
walked down that aisle when they were married in 1936.
Now it is quite different but still a very special place.

Coventry Cathedral is open to the public.
You can even climb the Cathedral Spire.
It survived the war.

How sad to wake up to the tragic news of  a
horrific terror attack in Paris last night.

Bayley Lane - A Little Family History

Before WWII my husband's mum and family lived here (to the right of where I am standing).  The buildings are all gone now.

Bayley Lane, Coventry

Before the war in 1936, his mum was married in Coventry Cathedral because that was her Parish Church and soon after moved outside Coventry.  During the bombing of Coventry, her father and brothers still lived in Bayley Lane and survived.

The building on the left is part of Drapers' Hall.  (I will cover that building in another posting some day.)  The Old Cathedral is straight ahead and the New Cathedral is beyond.  The brown panel on the right is one of about 6 steel panels naming businesses that were here before the war.

PS.  Happy Birthday, Peter!

Skywatch Friday - Sky From Inside

The Old Coventry Cathedral

Two weeks ago, I shared a photograph taken from outside the Cathedral looking in.
I thought you might like to see inside the Cathedral
as it stands now after being bombed in WWII.

The New Cathedral is to the left. The spire is behind me.

A footnote: My husband's parent were married in this very Cathedral in 1936,
not many years before the Coventry Blitz
His mother lived in Bayley Lane (next to the Cathedral)
and this was her parish church.

For many more photographs featuring the 'sky'
follow the link to SKYWATCH FRIDAY.

Have a good weekend all. Cheers!
