As The Crow Flies

Coventry City Centre

View of Coventry City Centre from about 6 miles away (I'm guessing).
Photo was taken from a spot on a hill just outside Wolston Village.

Please note the two of three Spires shown here:
Coventry Cathedral (left) & Holy Trinity Church (right).
Christchurch is out of view.

City Daily Photo Theme Day - Sensual

Lady Godiva
St. Mary's Guildhall, Coventry

This sculpture is by WC Marshall, mid 19th Century.
The Oriel window dates between 1394 and 1414.
It was rebuilt in 1826 and later restored in 1893.

I posted this photograph in September, 2012, and
thought is was perfect for today's theme day topic.

Museum of the Moon...

...at Coventry Cathedral

This is worth sharing.  It isn't often that you can walk into the
beautiful Coventry Cathedral and find
our Moon sharing the space with you.

I will leave some links below, if you are
interested in learning more about this exhibit.

The image above is a sculpture made entirely
of lollipop sticks with the Moon beyond.

And, finally (below), the Moon as seen through the
magnificent Cathedral windows.

All photographs taken today with an iPhone 6.

Station Walk

Warwick Road
What you see between Coventry Train Station
and the City Centre.

The Spires just past the mirror architecture,

and plenty of flowers.

The powers that be (in this case, Coventry City Council, I believe),
have done an amazing job.  Even on a very dull day,
this all looks so pretty for those walking between
town and the train station.

Spot The Difference

Earl Street, Coventry
The Earl of Mercia (centre) and Coventry Council House (right)

The photo above was taken last week and
the one below was taken May, 2015.

The bridge was removed in late April, 2017.
The link bridge was constructed in 1970 to
connect the historic council house
to civic centre buildings to the left.

PS.  The building in the middle, straight ahead, is a pub :).

The Lamp

Bayley Lane, Coventry

Bayley Lane is a narrow street between
Coventry Cathedral ruins and St Mary's Hall.
I took this photograph in 2013 and
I can say that this Lane looks just the same today.

Reconciliation

Coventry Cathedral Ruins

Sculpture by Josefina de Vasconcellos
placed in Coventry Cathedral ruins in
1995, 50 years after the end of WWII

For a short period of time this sculpture
was moved to the new cathedral for safekeeping
while the floor of the old cathedral was being restored.

The wording reads:

Reconciliation

In 1995, 50 years after the end of the Second World War
this sculpture by Josefina de Vasconcellos has been
given by Richard Branson as a token of reconciliation.

An identical sculpture has been placed on behalf
of the people of Coventry in the Peace Garden, Hiroshima, Japan.

Both sculptures remind us that, in the face of destructive forces,
human dignity and love will triumph over disaster
and bring nations together in respect and peace.

hence, the variety in weather conditions.

Belgrade Theatre Relief Panel

Belgrade Theatre
Exterior Wall - facing Corporation Street

This large relief panel was created and designed
in 1958 by James C Brown, sculpture.

Below is a full description I found in records of the
Public Monuments & Sculptures Association's
website which I quote....

'Sculptured concrete panel over the main entrance to the Belgrade Theatre symbolising the city of Belgrade and is based on a 1684 engraving by Giacomo de Rossi.  The relief shows a fortress on a hill above a walled city, surrounded by the river Danube. The city arms and its name in Cyrillic script on a banner are at the top of the relief. The dark colour of the textured panel provides a visual interruption form the smoothness of the surrounding windows. The relief shows a fortress on a hill above a walled city, which is surrounded by a river. At the top left, the city's coat of arms appear and at top right, its name is shown on a banner in Cyrillic script. The city is presumably Belgrade, given the name of the theatre.

James Brown was asked by the city architect to design and make the relief. The Yugoslav Embassy was consulted about the project, and they supplied the Giacomo de Rossi engraving upon which Brown based his design. Brown first made the relief in brick clay and then had it cast in cement fondu with Penmaenware granite chippings for aggregate.

The theatre was named after the Yugoslav city as a gesture of friendship between the two cities and in recognition of a gift of timber to furnish the interior of the building.'

Apologies for a large amount of text, but
I thought it best to quote the full description.

The Belgrade Theatre is a live performance theatre, seating 858 people.
The Belgrade was the first civic theatre to be built after WWII in Britain.

CDP Theme Day - Transitions

Transitions in Aviation

Sir Frank Whittle
Inventor of the Turbojet Engine
1907 - 1996

Sir Frank Whittle, a British Pilot, born in Coventry
designed and patented the first turbojet engine in 1930.

Millennium Place, Coventry

This statute of  Sir Frank Whittle was unveiled in Coventry
on what would have been the 100th birthday
of this great inventor from Coventry.
Above the statute is the 'Whittle Arch' -
described as a twin-arch tubular structure.

Below you can see more of the Whittle Arch.
The blue structure is a walkway, called 'The Glass Bridge'.
You can just make out the statute in front of the bus.

There is plenty of construction going on in Coventry too.
More university student accommodation, I am told.

Participating (a day late) in City Daily Photo
Theme Day.  For more 'Transitions' photographs,
please following the link HERE.

Changing Coventry

Trinity Lane (on the right)

I haven't seen the sun since Saturday,
so I thought I would share this photograph
taken right in the middle of Coventry on a
sunny day last month.

The Tudor building is The Flying Standard pub.
The colorful building on the left is student accommodation
and the 2 cranes are at building sites for more student accommodation.

Hope the sun is shining wherever you are!

Growth Of The City

Sainsbury's, Trinity Street
Diagrammatic map - part painted on
Swedish Pearl Granite
by Artist, John Skelton in 1964.

You can see the words 'Cofas Tree' in the centre.
It is thought that Cofa's Tree is mostly likely the source of
the name 'Coventry'.  The gold leaf buildings are the City Gates.

Please pardon the reflection.  This map shows the
growth of Coventry from 1748 to 1932.
It is located by an emergency exit door of
 Sainsbury's grocery store
and is not visible from outside.

Time Capsule

Friargate

Under the plaque is a sealed canister. The canister contains a collection of
2016 Coventry memorabilia. The plan is to open the 'time capsule' in 2066.

The building under construction (below) will house Coventry City Council offices.

Friargate is a £100 million regeneration project
between the Coventry Railway Station and the City Centre.
We are told there will be new office buildings, hotels, residential and leisure space.
And, I see, there is a 'time capsule' too :).

PS:  The plaque is in the middle of the walkway.
That couple have just walked by it.

Happy Birthday, Nadine xx

CDP Theme Day - Library

Coventry Central Library

Chess Anyone? That's the scene now.
Quite different (I expect) to
how it must have looked when
Chuck Berry recorded 'My Ding-a-Ling' right here
in 1972.

In 1986 the library opened in premises that were formerly
the Locarno ballroom and later Tiffany's night club.

Happily, there are some signs on display to share some of
the heritage of what is now a very quiet and peaceful library.

 ...and some photographs too.

Then (above) -
Now (below).

On the first day of the month, members of the
City Daily Photo blog group
share theme day photos from Cities around the world.
