Coventry Pubs #8 - The Golden Cross

8 Hay Lane
One of the Oldest Pubs in Coventry

The architecture is described as
Tudor Style with jettied upper floors.
The building has been altered and extended since
it was built in 1583.

It is located in the oldest part of Coventry.
You can just see the pub on the left here in Hay Lane.
The brick building was once a Crown Court
and Holy Trinity Church is beyond.

(Below) The Golden Cross is on right with
Coventry Cathedral ruins beyond and
former Crown Court to left.

There used to be another church (St Michael's Baptist Church)
on the corner where you can see a white sign (above).  It was
destroyed in the blitz in 1940.

It is thought that in the 15th century this site was once occupied
by Coventry's mint for a short while.

Coventry Pubs #7 - Litten Tree

1a Warwick Row
On a windy day in November, 2015.

Not every public house in Coventry is an architectural gem.
This is just a plain brick building located between the City Centre
and the Coventry Train Station.

When I was taking these photos it was the Zebra Crossing
I wanted to share.  I like them.
Across the street in New Union Street
stands one of Coventry's 3 historic spires -

Sorry about all the text here.
I just have to add something about the
yellow 'globe' atop the black and white pole.
It has a name, Belisha beacon, and a history too.
Always learning :).

Hope your week is going well!!!

Coventry Pubs #6 - The Flying Standard

2 - 10 Trinity Street
The Flying Standard (front on left)
3, 4 & 5 Priory Row
Lychgate Cottages (adjoining to rear on right)

This public house is named after a motor vehicle
produced by the Standard Motor Company.
Standard Motor Company manufactured a range of cars
in Coventry between 1903 and 1960.

The Motor Victoria was Standard's first car built in 1903.
The Flying Standard motor car was produced in 1936.

This is a large steel framed building with applied
timber frame was built in 1938 and designed to fit
in neatly with the adjoining medieval Lychgate Cottages.
Before it became a public house in 1999 it was
occupied by Samuel's the jewelers and Timothy Whites, chemist.

This public house stands on a historic site that
dates back to the early 1400's.  Maybe I can
explore more of that in a future post.

Coventry Pubs #5 - The Earl Of Mercia

18 High Street

Located across the street from Coventry's Council House,
this building opened in 1896 as Lloyds Bank.

Since the early 1990s it has been a public house
with a number of names, the most recent The Earl of Mercia.

The name is after Leofric who was The Earl of Mercia
and the husband of Lady Godiva.

This is a Wetherspoon's public house which
translates into reasonably priced food and drink,
conveniently located in the City Centre.

Coventry Pubs #4 - The Castle

7 Little Park Street

The Castle pub extends into the Grade II listed
Georgian town house to the left.  It is
one of only three surviving buildings of this type in Coventry.
The others are:
Kirby House (16 Little Park Street) and
11 Priory Row All were built in the early 18th Century.

Located right in the center of Coventry
Below is a look at more of Little Park Street with The Castle in the middle.

Photos taken with my phone camera.
How amazing :).

Coventry Pubs #3 - The Millpool

The Millpool, Hipswell Highway

This public house is within walking distance of where we live.
The building is fairly new (built in the 1950's) so I'm
confident that it was never a mill.
Maybe there was a mill nearby on the River Sowe
and it looked like the picture on the sign.  If anyone knows, please leave a comment.

We stopped by recently to have a
a drink...latte this time :).

Coventry Pubs #2 - The Rocket

Warwick Road, Coventry

Unfortunately, this public house is now closed and
boarded up.  It is located next to Coventry Railway Station.
I thought I had better get a photo, in case it is demolished.

The train in the sign is the Stephenson's Rocket.

Coventry Pubs #1 - The Rainbow Inn

Allesley Village, Coventry

'Serving Ales Since 1680'.  My goodness me!

Coventry has plenty of pubs (also known as public houses or
licensed premises).  Many have closed over recent years.  So
now seems a good time to start photographing what is left.
I'll add more to this series from time to time.
