Mixed Messages

William Morris Building
Gosford Street

The message above seems straight forward
until you see the sign on the wall opposite (below).
Spot the difference between these two ghost signs :).

The William Morris Building, now part of Coventry University,
has a most interesting history.  The University added
two floors in early 2000.  Before that in early 1900's
ARNO cars and motorcycles were built here.
After that HOTCHKISS ET CIE produced 50,000 machine guns
during WWI and then produced engines for Morris cars.
Morris took over and the premises became MORRIS ENGINES LIMITED in 1923.
By 1930 NUFFIELD MECHANISATIONS produced armaments during WW2.
After the war it became the
Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance.
If you would like more detail, follow the link HERE.

The arrows (below) show where
the two ghost signs are located (with their conflicting information).

I enjoyed trooping out in cold today searching
for the sign below.  I was really surprised when
my husband spotted a second sign.  Well done, that man!

Study Inn

Trinity Street, Coventry
Wall of Maps

Coventry has two top universities -
It is not surprising that student accommodation has become
big business.  I'm not partial to the color scheme of the
building but I do like the mural of flags.

The way things are going, Coventry
will soon be a university campus city.

This building (one of 3 located right in middle of City),
is formerly an office and is now full of VIP studio flats.
There are various weekly fees which cover utilities,
internet, appliances, housekeeping and security, etc.

PS Photos were taken on 26th Oct back in the sunshine days :).

Coventry University - Square One

Another City Daily Photo 'Squares' Theme Day shot not used last week.
I like the sign so here is a little about Coventry Univeristy.

I am standing just outside one of Coventry University's venues
known as Square One
located not far from Coventry Cathedral.

Walk through those doors and students have a choice
of bars, cinema and conference space
in a central location in Coventry City Centre.

Coventry Cathedral to My Tree...

...and back.
The photo below is taken from up the Coventry Cathedral Spire
looking towards my favorite tree in Coombe Country Park.
Don't worry if you can't see 'my tree'.  It is 4.2 miles away :)

The Old Cathedral is at the bottom of this photo with parts of
Coventry University and The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum across the street.

The shot below is looking back from Coombe Country Park
towards the Cathedral Spire in the middle with 'my tree' on the left.

The Hub, Coventry University

The glass...

The sky...

Today Mr LOL and I took the bus to town.
I had a physio appointment that went well.
I brought my camera and
had fun taking a few snaps outside
Coventry University's central gathering place
known as The Hub.

View from University

Taken from Coventry University - looking northeast.
The buildings opposite is new student accommodation for the University.

 Below - looking east

Below - looking southeast towards Rugby.
The tower is the Whitley Incinerator.
At the moment, pipe is being laid from there to the City Centre
to heat nine buildings, including the new Cathedral.
I live about 3 miles in that direction.

There is no glamorous architecture to see out these windows.  What you see are row after row of housing and quite a bit of blue sky....hooray!  Coventry Cathedral is directly behind me.

Think it will be 'S' for 'Swan' tomorrow.  That 'Ho-Hum' Swan has 5 additions to the family.

Coventry University....

....library to the left and Faculty of Engineering and Computing (silver building) to the right.

The photo above was taken last week.  I love these two buildings.  The photo below is taken through window from inside the silver building last night.  We went on a tour.  I'll show you another view
on Friday and more from inside next week.

Below is the view from the Ring Road (exit to London Road) looking at some of Coventry University.  Architecture here is diverse with buildings of modern design next to
foundation ruins of a friary church dating back to 1342.

Left to Right -
Student accommodation (in distance),
Student Center (red brick)
and to the foreground - friary ruins.

Coventry is home to two outstanding universities - University of Warwick and Coventry University.

Tomorrow I will show you a duck :).

Coventry University's Latest Architecture

Faculty of Engineering and Computing
Thanks to some rather innovative architecture, Coventry University has another unusual building for the students to use and enjoy.  I showed this building under construction in March.   Here is how it looks now.

I am anxious to see what it looks like at night.  Next time we have some clear skies (not likely soon), I will hotfoot it over to have a look.

Needless to say, these photographs were NOT taken today, but last week.  Our old friend 'rain' has returned with his mate, 'high winds'.

Coventry University Library Ventilation Towers

Coventry University's Library Rooftop
Coventry University offers yet another fascinating building for us to view with amazement. This photograph of the library was taken from the 15th floor of the University car park next door.  Each tower is a source of natural ventilation to the building.  You can also see one of the lightwells (looks like a greenhouse), designed to provide natural lighting.   The building opened in 2000 and is named after Frederick William Lanchester, who made important contributions to automotive engineering in Coventry.

PS.  Looking out my window now...that blue sky has disappeared.
