May Theme Day - The Creative Artisan

A Wattle Fence.  Made by hand weaving thin branches between upright stakes of wood.  An ancient form of fence making dating back to the Bronze Age, so I am told.

Last Sunday, Mr LOL and I went on a walk around Coombe Country Park.  Near the Top Pool (as it is called), there is a building that is to be used for educational purposes.  It sits along side a beautiful small lake.

Just outside 'creative artisans' have designed and are building an outdoor class area for schools.  No metal benches and fences to be found here.....

The fencing is wattle made from natural branches.    If they cover the branches with something like mud, it will be a wattle and daub fence.  The wood chippings are cut and processed from the park and the benches speak for themselves.  It is a beautiful area where design and creativity are well suited for its intended use.

Thank you for visiting Today Around Coventry.  Photos taken at Coombe Country Park, located about 5 minutes drive from Coventry.  Cheers!

In the right setting, these old fences are perfect. And, this is the right setting.

I love seeing things like this! Lovely fence, and seems a vanishing art. (How nice the artisans plan to pass on their skills through classes.) I love these captures from your park visits!:)

Interesting name for this kind of fence. I imagine they are not frequently constructed anymore. Like the flowers above the fence in the first photo; complements the fence.

Lovely to see these fences still being created Lauren. The watery reflections in the third shot are too gorgeous, and you know I'm a big fan of the 'natural' bench style :)Excellent post for the theme.
p.s. regards to Mr LOL.

These fences are so charming. Thanks for teaching us the distinction between wattle and daub. Love learning things like this.

if they use "daub" on the wattle health and safety might be on to them - traditonal daub wasn't simply "mud".

De magnifiques clôtures (et pourtant je n'aime pas les clôtures !)
Mais j'aime l'acacia...

I've never seen a fence like this before. It's quite striking. The photo of the fence and the flowering tree is especially lovely.

Quite awesome! The Hawaiians were noted for unmortared stone walls of uncut stones

The fence is something I've not seen before. I should imagine it would take a great deal of time in creating it. Thanks for explaining about its creation and how old they are. It's fascinating.

Cheers Buck and JM. I found this theme such a challenge and then at the weekend there I was standing in front of that fence. How about that :).
