City Daily Photo Theme Day - Sensual

Lady Godiva
St. Mary's Guildhall, Coventry

This sculpture is by WC Marshall, mid 19th Century.
The Oriel window dates between 1394 and 1414.
It was rebuilt in 1826 and later restored in 1893.

I posted this photograph in September, 2012, and
thought is was perfect for today's theme day topic.

The Lamp

Bayley Lane, Coventry

Bayley Lane is a narrow street between
Coventry Cathedral ruins and St Mary's Hall.
I took this photograph in 2013 and
I can say that this Lane looks just the same today.

Painted On The Wall In 1590

St. Mary's Guildhall
Mercers' Room

Mercers Company Coat of Arms

The Mercers' Room is located in the
Guildhall's Gatehouse (built 1340-42).
In 1590 the room was leased by the
Mercers Company to be used as their meeting hall.
The Mercers Company in Coventry had a membership
merchants and traders.

* * *
I wish I could say I have a photo
of the actual room.  I don't.
I took this one of the mural in 2012
on a Heritage Open Day and came across it the other day.
I recall deleting room shots because they were poor.
Ironically, I used to work in St Mary's Hall
years ago.  Why didn't I take a loads of shots then :).

ABC Wednesday - A Is For Across

St Mary Street and Bayley Lane
St Mary's Guildhall (to right - where I used to work), Drapers Hall (left)
and Cathedral Ruins straight ahead.

There aren't many T-Junctions in Coventry
where you have 3 historic buildings
'across' the street from each other.

The white canopy covers the entrance to
Coventry New Cathedral that adjoins the Old Cathedral Ruins.

Why did I takes these photographs?
It was the notice board below that caught my attention :).

It reads - 'Pray for Ourselves'.

Around Coventry Cathedral Ruins

Bayley Lane, Coventry

I thought it might be fun to identify some of the historic buildings
located in the City Centre from this vantage point up the
Old Cathedral Tower.  See the 'key' below.
The truck is turning into St Mary Street.  More on that tomorrow.

In the Cathedral Quarter there are some
wonderful buildings that survived World War II.
The area where the museum stands was destroyed in the war.

Note from Lauren:
I took this photo in 2013.  It pretty much looks like this today.

any of these places, click on the 'labels' below.

Rust And Ruins

On the first day of each month City Daily Photo has a Theme Day.
The theme for 1st September was 'Rust and Ruins'.
Today, I found what might have been a perfect entry.

The metal signs commemorate the ownership of property in Bayley Lane, destroyed during the Blitz.
You can see Coventry Cathedral ruins in the middle with the new Cathedral beyond.

A closer look at occupants of 43 Bayley Lane between 1410 and 1940.

I am adding this photo, also taken today.

Update:  I have missed my blogging friends.
I am recovering from having a tooth out.  Hooray.
And, I am taking a month off to do a little of this and that.

Stay well and be happy!  See you soon :).

Helpful Signs

22 Bayley Lane
Last week I took the shot (below) standing in the doorway of
the medieval building above.

Why the title, 'Helpful Signs'?
Throughout Coventry there are many information
signs detailing the history of points of interest.
I rejoice when I see one of these signs.
They 'help' me to figure out what it is I am photographing
and to inform the nice tourists visiting Coventry.

Better go back and take a picture of
23 Bayley Lane :).

I Was At College In Pasadena....

....on this day 50 years ago.

Today I was outside Coventry Cathedral looking up.

The wooden frame at the top of this shot is
The Cottage, 22 Bayley Lane, built about 1500.
I will show you this wonderful timber framed building next week.

E Is For Elephant

The Elephant & Castle emblem is found on Coventry's Coat of Arms.
This stain glass window is in The Drapers' Room, St. Mary's Guildhall.
This room formed the first floor of the gatehouse and was built around 1340.

These stained glass windows date back to 1888, replacing an
earlier Venetian window.  The Drapers' Room is loaded with history
so perhaps it would be a good idea to talk about it another day.

Here is the whole window above.  Below is a favorite
shot of mine of the same window taken from
St. Mary's Guildhall courtyard looking up to
Coventry Cathedral's Spire.

I used to work in St. Mary's Guildhall.  So
did Mr LOL.  History was around us
every hour of our working day.  Wonderful!

Need An 'X'

St. Mary's Hall, Coventry, to the rescue.

The letter for ABC Wednesday today is X.
A difficult one.  I was going to give up
until I spotted the crossed swords
on this beautiful stained glass window.

How fascinating to find an entry in Wikipedia about
His link to Coventry, not sure.
It's on the list :).

Guildhall Gateway Entrance

The best part is the ceiling.

This is the entrance to St. Mary's Guildhall.  I used to work here soon after I moved to England.  I was always in awe of my surroundings but I don't ever recall appreciating the detail here as much as I do now.  Across the street is Coventry Cathedral.

The central portion of the sculpture, known as the Coronation of the Virgin, is easily missed in this passage between Bayley Lane and the courtyard entrance to St. Mary's Guildhall.  (And, it is hard to photograph too.  Must bring a tripod.)

Construction of the Guildhall started around 1342.  From what I can gather, the sculptures possibly date back to the late 1300s.

Corridor Of Bayley Lane

This narrow part of Bayley Lane is home to St. Mary's Hallfirst built in 1340's (left).  'The Cottage' (centre) is a fine example of a medieval timber framed house built about 1500.  The outside walls of Coventry Cathedral is on the left.  All of what you see survived the WWII.

I used to work in St. Mary's Hall.  I had the pleasure of stepping into this Lane regularly as did my husband who also worked there.

St Mary's Guildhall, Coventry

St. Mary's Guildhall, Bayley Lane

This wonderful building (with its many rooms) was first built in the 1340's for the merchant guild of St. Mary.  There is something of historic interest in every corner of this room.  So you know I will revisit again.  In meantime, just enjoy this view from the minstrel gallery.

The statute of Lady Godiva pictured here is on the left just beyond the chairs through the archway.

Lady Godiva, St Mary's Guildhall, Coventry

W C Marshall's mid 19th century statue of Lady Godiva

On the west side of the Great Hall  is this oriel window thought to date between 1394 and 1414.  It was rebuilt in 1826 and later restored in 1893.  Such a beautiful setting for Mr Marshall's work.

There We Have It - RAIN

Coventry Cathedral through Herbert Art Gallery Windows
It never stopped raining all day today.  Perfect day to sit in and watch on TV the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in London (in the rain) which looked pretty spectacular nevertheless.  Fingers crossed it is a nicer day tomorrow.

Coventry Cathedral - Along side Bayley Lane

Coventry Cathedral and Spire, Bayley Lane Coventry (Drapers' Hall to left)

Cathedral window in more detail
Today was a beautiful January day with blue sky to give super detail to the Old Cathedral in Coventry.  I am standing outside Herbert Art Gallery and Museum (behind me) looking up Bayley Lane.  Drapers' Hall is to the left with St. Mary's Hall beyond.  The reddish steel-plate structures are sited along the front of the Gallery and Museum.  They show names of people and businesses that occupied Bayley Lane prior to World War II when the whole area was bombed extensively from 1940 onwards.
