G Is For Grey or Gray

Taken during our big snowfall last month.  My offering for Grey or Gray.....

The weather forecast mentioned 'more snow' but it just hasn't happened in Coventry.  I think that is it for this year. Maybe not. In the meantime I have still have loads of snow photos.  They will appear from time to time.  This one is at the entrance to Coombe Abbey Hotel (behind me).

Now to 'grey or gray'.  Moving from USA to England has many challenges.  Learning a foreign language isn't one of them or so you would think.  Spelling is!  One of my first jobs here in Coventry was spent behind a typewriter.  I transcribed shorthand notes dictated to me by a learned man who accepted nothing less than perfection.  No option for creative spelling here.  Now that I am retired and my spell-checker seems to be American too, I mix it up a little.  So you will find no spelling consistency in this blog.  That adds to the fun for me. By the way, here in England we tend to spell the colour/color of grey/gray like this - 'Grey'.  Cheers!

For more photos featuring the letter 'G', follow the link to ABC Wednesday.

PS.  Just found this Spelling USA/UK link.  Have some fun!

What a wonderful snowy sight, but hopefully as you say, no more to come- this side of December anyway...

Snow again, lol ! I am so longing for spring ! I don't realize that the difference between American and English English is so big ! Maybe because it's not my mothertongue and I learned English English at school.

No matter how you spell gray, its a lovely pic. We have 20" of snow on the ground 12" from last week and 9" from yesterday. It's snowing again and we expect 2" today. Our schools and businesses have been closed for days.

grey is a color, gray is a name .. of course these are not hard rules but clearly open to interpretation and the vagaries of location ... that is one gorgeous photo no matter how you choose to spell the color/colour ;)

That's a beautiful photo, Lauren. I'm voting for Gray as a color/colour, and Grey as a name, at least while I'm living on this side of the pond! The spelling differences are fascinating though, aren't they? And then there are the two pronunciations for words spelled the same. That's fun, too!

Nice capture. I've always preferred the spelling 'grey'. One of the great things about having a personal blog is that you can publish whatever you want -- including spelling variations.

First, Gorgeous Grey photo! I love the way you composed it. Second, I had a fun chuckle at gray/grey - and bookmarked the excellent page, thx! - even a few short years b/w UK/US was enough to confuse me permanently (to keep us on toes, our UK/US home laptops also spellcheck things:). And accents aside, do you ever find yourself pronouncing things the US/UK way but in the wrong country (e.g., (h)erb, sta(y)tus, tomato(e) etc)? My brain still trips over those time to time!:)

Cheers all. Appreciate your comments on the photo. So kind.

Always fun to see new faces (so to speak) so I am off to visit, AmitAag, Jama, Gattina and ZacMontoya for the first time.

Now to the aspects of living in England :) -

Tanya - Well done on the milk and sugar in your tea...makes for a great cuppa!!!

Ann - When you say you have snow you aren't joking. Hang in there.

Daryl - right, I will remember :).

Lulu/Adele - I can say 'banana' and 'tomato' as the English do without it hurting but I draw the line on 'garage'. The word that makes everyone laugh is how I say 'water'. Yesterday, we had a small tree cut down in our front garden and I could not believe it when I referred our garden as the 'front yard'. It surprised me. I gave up years ago trying speak correctly depending on which side of the pond I was on. Everyone that knows me has given up too :). Adds to the fun!

Lovely snow shot. I tend to interchange gray/ grey and find myself using UK spelling occasionally. Probably due to the books I read.

The picture may look grEy, but it certainly is beautiful. Being a Canadian, we spell the British way, but we're always aware of the American spellings, too.

It can be frustrating when your spell checker returns the American version and you are in the UK

Funny, garage was the exact word I was thinking of!

Marvellous image LOL, now if I had spelled marvellous with two ll's on one of my American blogs it would have corrected me to one.. Weird hey! Being a Scot and growing up in colonial Africa, it's the English version puor moi!

Gerald - Do you think? Oh....I would love more snow!!!

Raf - Thank You!

Leslie - Ah...I thought your spelling would be more American. Interesting.

Zongrik & Chubskulet Rose - You get the prize for the most unusual names. (Hope I am spelling them right :)).

Meghan - You know something, I think we all do. World is getting smaller.

Mo - Confusing for sure.

Adele - Really? How neat.

Grace - I love how much French you put in the mix.
