Thatched Roof Thursday #13 - Another Update

Cruck House, Hinckley Road, Walsgrave, Coventry

Today!  They are making real progress but it takes time. It is a big roof.  The weather hasn't been much help and with snow on the way (says she jumping up and down with excitement), being a thatcher has its challenges.

Have a look to see how the roof looked just before Christmas here.

One more thing.  The photo below was taken a week ago.  Keep and eye on what happens around the chimney on the right and the brick work that is protruding.

I'll do another update in a couple of weeks.  It might be done!

PS.  I went to the dentist today and I lived :).

Wow, it looks like they really *did* make good progress! Love the action shots:) I wonder how the snow might affect their work (what an exciting change, though, from rain rain rain)? Would love to see how it turns out in a few weeks...

That's looking really good. I love the appearance of thatched roofs.

I love the look of thatched roofs...but it must be a headache to take care of!!! (we've been dealing with a leaky roof under a foot or so of ice and snow...)

It sure does take a long time.

it's so amazing to me that this roof is so durable! you wouldn't think so by looking at it would you? they are really coming along!
snow!! exciting! although we are having such gorgeous weather this week...supposed to be 70 over the weekend, i'm so excited!
have a great weekend :)

oh, there's a house around the corner that has been getting some work done and i noticed the other day that the roof looks a little like a hatch roof, it isn't of course, but made me think of you!

Lulu - I can't wait to see if they put some super decorative detail on top. Apparently there is still enough straw on roof to protect it in all weathers. Nice.

SRQ - Thanks for stopping by. I have had a look at your site...very nice.

Chieftess - Leaks are definitely not good. Have fun getting that sorted sooner than later, I expect.

Jack and Chrissy - Yes, it is taking much longer than they originally said (3 weeks) but it truly is idyllic as you suggest, Chrissy.

Tanya - Yes, progress is being made. I really am hopeful about the snow (but I have to be quiet about it). What great weather you are having. You will have to photograph the house around the corner just for fun :). Sweet of you to think of me.

Thanks for your comments. Cheers!

Do many people still choose thatched roofs?

It looks like they took off all the old thatch completely, and started fresh. Is that the case?

Hey Petrea and Perth DP - Anyone can have one but they don't last and mostly on listed buildings or countryside cottages. Very expensive too. They don't take all the thatch off, if possible. Need some old straw to fix new stuff to. I am amazed at how many layers of straw are going on this roof. Keep an eye on that chimney :).

Cheers, Adele. I am eating really carefully...don't want to disrupt my visits to see this thatching in progress :).
