The Name Is Correct

Wells-next-the-Sea
Port on North Norfolk coast of England

To make a long story short:
Going way back (Domesday Book - 1086) the name was 'Guella' and by 1326 is was 'Welles'.
There were many spring-wells rising through the chalk in the area.
The present name originated in the early 19th Century,
distinguishing it from other places with the same name.
In 1857 it became known as Wells-on-Sea.
But, in 1956 the local Council voted to re-adopt the present name.

Taken at low tide looking back where the top shot was taken.
The big boat on right is a restaurant.

Yes, it is a pretty port but what I am not showing you is:
 - A cute miniature steam railway that transports you to the beach
(or you can walk - about 1 mile, or go by car),
- The sandy beach with charming and colorful beach huts,
- An abundance of restaurants and shops,
- Or, the fantastic ice cream cone I enjoyed :).

If you go to London, great...but get yourself on a tour of the
Norfolk Coast...it is a must!!!!

You are making me ever more envious. That a gorgeous place, and your photos are stunning, and I wish I could visit there, too. Thanks also for the history lesson.

Short-clearly story (history).
Great photos!

I couldn't agree with you more. We used to take the children there on holiday and they loved it, especially Sheringham.

A pleasant looking area. The tide seems low.

Fun! And that second shot really sells the place.

I LOVE Wells and plan to call in there while we're in Blakeney in a few weeks' time. (Did you get to see Blakeney as well? Beautiful place.) Wells has possibly the best fish and chips in the world, and some of its shops sell things you really never knew you needed. :)

Absolutely Lauren. Living by the coast here I love to visit the coastal areas where ever I travel. I'll never forget the first time my sister and I walked on Brighton beach.. very ouchy shingle :)

I've missed a lot on my many trips to London. I really need to get out into the countryside and see some of these beautiful places.

I remember the place (and eating mashed potatoes) but I didn't know or remember the history bit! Thanks for the trip down memory lane (and we are talking a long time ago!!!)
