Restored Ghost Signs

120 Upper Spon Street
Part of Black Swan Terrace
Built in 1454

In the second half of the 20th century this premises was
occupied by wholesale & retail tobacconist, H. E. Jones
and later the London Laundry.

In the photo below you can see 3 of the 6 terraced cottages.
They were originally built by the Benedictines in the
15th century as a group of live-work units.
People had their business and lived in cottages
with 3 rooms only (2 downstairs and 1 upstairs).

In the 1990s the buildings were close to being demolished
but the Spon End Building Preservation Trust
was able to restore and reflect different periods of history
as part of the restoration project.  I will revisit :).

history of Black Swan Terrace, please follow the link HERE.

What an interesting place. I'm so glad it was saved and renovated. The history is quite impressive.

That building looks so interesting. Pleased they had the foresight to preserve and refurbish it.

This is similar to what they do in The Villages, although there they build new buildings and add old faded signs to fool people because The Villages is Disneyland for Adults! :)

I like these, though. But I have a question: If you "restore" a ghost, would you be able to tell? Would there be a sign? Heh, heh!

They did a nice job on that store front and painting those old ghost signs is a special treat.

Every town needs its equivalent of the Spon End Building Preservation Trust. Bless them!

Not exactly ghost signs since they've been spruced up. But part of a charming scene that locals are probably glad was preserved. Love the stone lintel over one of the windows. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.

Nice to see these have been maintained. It's fun to see what kinds of business used to be there!
