75 Years On

Coventry Cathedral Ruins
Today is the 75th Anniversary of
the bombing of Coventry Cathedral during a
devastating WWII eleven hour bombing raid on Coventry.

The photo above shows life in the Cathedral ruins today.
People visit, children play and many take hundreds of photographs are taken.

If you would like to read more about the Coventry Blitz,
see paragraph headed '14th November 1940' in the link HERE.

Around the corner from the Cathedral Ruins (in Hay Lane)
are some photographs of the Cathedral in 1930.
They are on display by permission of the Coventry History Centre,
The Herbert Museum & Art Gallery.
Have a look:

What a grand place it must have been.
I love to tell people that my husband's parents
walked down that aisle when they were married in 1936.
Now it is quite different but still a very special place.

Coventry Cathedral is open to the public.
You can even climb the Cathedral Spire.
It survived the war.

How sad to wake up to the tragic news of  a
horrific terror attack in Paris last night.

How wonderful to know that your husband's parents were married there. It was a beautiful place. Are there any plans to rebuild it?

It seems like we will never be rid of those despicable people who see death and destruction as a way of life and claim it is their "god's" will.

It does seem like it, Lowell. Almost adjoining the ruins is the new Coventry Cathedral that was consecrated in 1962.

Such a difference from then and now. At least part of it's survived.

Yes, Lowell. As usual, my sentiments are much the same as yours.

Such hard times. I think it's hard for us younger generations to fully understand how it is to actually live in a time of war (when the war is in your hometown and not somewhere far away). Beautiful images.

I am so pleased they left the ruins of the bombed Cathedral when they built the new one adjoining it.

I've loved every single shot you've taken of the cathedral ruins Lauren, I knew you would have something special today! The old b&w's are wonderful to see, merci beaucoup.

How wonderful to know that your husband's parents were married here and how sad this it is now in ruins. However, it does make me wonder if weddings are ever held in this shell of a building today.

I'm always fascinated by the stories behind the ruins in the UK! And yes, very sad to hear what is still going on in Paris!

There's a similar church in Lisbon also destroyed during the war, with just the outside walls standing. A great reminder of the ravages of war!
