V Is For Vacant...

...World War II Pillbox nestled near the beach in Skegness, Lincolnshire (taken in June, 2013).

To be fair, I would be stepping out of my comfort zone
if I were to put in words my knowledge of British defences
during WW2.  What I can say is that, as a tourist, I get
quite excited when I see one of these scattered along the coastline.
They are no longer required and well and truly 'vacant'.

You can see the pillbox almost blends in with the landscape.
The view it has towards the North Sea is below.

Your stepping into my comfort zone. That particular one looks like a type24 but if you want to see or know more you need to read my other blog

It's a hobby of mine searching them out. That one of yours looks in good condition

I was fascinated by the number I saw when I walked the Thames Path in the Summer. Bill Nicholls gave me lots of interesting information about them.

That is so cool you found one out there! I had no idea about pillboxes under I spent more time in England - there's one at Putney Bridge, London and it took me a while to figure out what I was looking at whenever the tube stopped. Great choice for V!

It is interesting that there are some still standing.

WWII is now nearly 70 years in the past. Odd that these have not been torn down by now.

It looks strangely lonely... and yet perfectly in tune with its surroundings.

Good choice for theme, Lauren. Always good to remember how short a time ago they were a grim necessity.

Reminders of horrific times hey Lauren... Let's hope they are now being used by some sweet little creatures as safe shelters:)

Thanks for stopping by all. Enjoyed reading what you had to say.

Appreciate Bill's contribution!

Tanya - This one was behind a wire fence so I couldn't go in.

Grace - I expect there are no end of permanent residents now :).

We went to Normandy several years ago...eerie seeing the defense enclosures...but even more eerie...the craters left behind by the bombs...so many years later...

A nice VISUAL. Were the need to vacate all our defenses possible, that'd be a great world.

Gorgeous skies....what a pretty place. The structure probably has many stories to tell about its past. genie
