City Daily Photo Theme Day - Heights

This Theme Day topic inspired me to climb
Coventry Cathedral's Tower
and look into Coventry's historic Cathedral ruins.

Just 180 stairs to the parapet where I am standing.

The photo (below) looking up is taken from inside
The Cappers' Chapel (room on right).

See the crossbar support? It runs parallel to the tower's parapet
where I was standing looking down into the Cathedral ruins.
The spire to the right is Holy Trinity Church Spire.

The photo above will give you an idea how the
new Cathedral joins the Old Cathedral.

The photo below is looking into Bayley Lane.  The
buildings you see are historic, surviving WWII bombings.

It is wonderful that the outer walls of Coventry Cathedral
together with the Tower and Spire remain.
This is a place where visitors can explore, learn
and remember. A climb up the Tower is a 'must do'.
You can take your time - I did :).

Awesome view from up there, though so sad to see the place looking so bare from the bombing in the war.

Good for you - 180 steps but worth it for the view!

What fabulous shots taken at a fabulous landmark. I visited the cathedral a couple of years ago and was just entranced by it. I don't remember that it was possible then to climb up. I would have loved to. Now I want to go back.

Well done for climbing up so we could share the views from the comfort of our chairs.

Amazing view! I'd love to have a go at getting up there for myself!

I never realised you could climb up the tower. Thanks for that astonishing view of the new attached to the old.

You did it! I've been looking forward to this post. I like all the details but I have a favorite: the moss-covered gargoyle.

This shows a great perspective of the interior and shell of the old cathedral. And quite a contrast to the new one, which almost seems to dwarf the old!

I will take that challenge of going up 180 stairs! Great view from up there and I'm sure it would be different in every season!

That's about 179 too many steps for me, but what great views from on high. To see the entire nave, chancel, altar - pretty cool!

The exercise is good for you and well worth it for the views.

What! Only 180 steps..eh! An easy climb...only kidding :) Every view from this amazing cathedral is so special..I wonder if that was the reason this spot was picked all those years ago?

I really enjoyed looking at all the contributions for City Daily Photo's Theme Day - Heights. Amazing ideas had by all. Thank you for the comments left here. Appreciated. It took me 39 years (when I moved to Coventry) to finally make the climb...so glad.

PerthDP - You have raised an interesting question, Grace. I will keep and eye out for the answer :).

Do they display the "three nail cross" prominently?

Thank you for taking those 180 steps for us! Is the Holy Trinity church still in use?

Cloudia - To answer your question, I think I will show you. Aiming for next week. I'll let you know in advance.

Jeanette - The Coventry Cathedral is the main focal spot for worship but there are services in The Old Cathedral from time to time as well as many other events suitable for that location. Holy Trinity Church next door is also open for worship. Another beautiful church that survived WWII.
