That's right! The building opposite is known as Castle Gates House in Shrewsbury. It was moved to its present location in 1702 by the Earl of Bradford. He wanted to make way to build another building, later to become the Guildhall. Now that gets my vote for conservation.

Castle Gates House under watchful eye of Charles Darwin
Shrewsbury |
I am standing in the entrance to Castle Gates Library, looking past a statute of Charles Darwin (born in Shrewsbury) towards Castle Gates House.
Well, I am going to have to come back tomorrow to show you a tad more. But first, here is another view towards Castle Gates House. (Can you guess that there is a Castle nearby. It's behind me!)

How beautiful. You get to see the most amazing things there! Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Interesting bit about Darwin, too.
Wow! That must have been some undertaking back in the 17th century, with no power tools!
And I thought only Americans were crazy enough to move whole historic buildings to a new site! I guess it's a more universal thing :) This is a gorgeous site all around - I can't wait to check after my travels to see what new treasures await!
I still can't get over that monumental move, Lulu and Paul. Had to laugh at the reference to 'power tools', Paul.
Thanks, Adele. I am in two minds what to follow this up with. Might have to hop back to Warwick to show the River Avon and then go back for one more day in Shrewsbury. Decisions!
