Bronze Statues Sculpted by Sir Jacob Epstein

Mounted in 1960 on the main wall near the New Cathedral entrance.

Coventry Cathedral was rebuilt next to the Old Cathedral Ruins 

after the devastation of the Blitz in 1940.

The sculpture depicts Archangel Michael standing over

the Devil in triumph 

from the story of the angel rebellion in the

Book of Revelations.

These photographs were taken today

using my iPhone.

so you can see the ruins (left) and new Cathedral (right).

These are images of 2 large Portland Stone carved relief murals

located on the outer wall of the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum.

Titled:

Man's Struggle to Control the World Outside Himself (above)

and 

(below) Man's Struggle to Control the World Inside Himself

Walter Richie created these murals between 1954 and 1959.

They were originally located in Coventry's Precinct and

later moved to this location at the museum.

and more background info.

In the two photos below you can see Earl Street in both directions.

(below) Looking towards Council House and City Centre beyond.

Cathedral is just behind Council House.

Woman's Struggle :)

I can hardly believe that it has been a week since

my last blog post.  For that reason, I think it wise

to take a little break.  Rest and recreation sounds like fun.

Coventry Cross

With a little frustration (narrow slot to fit my camera)
I managed to get this view looking down from
Coventry Cathedral tower.

I have only photographed this once before.
Had a giggle when  I noticed that one
of the shots I previously used shows the spot
where I was standing to take this shot.  (Are you following me?)

Skywatch Friday - Coventry's Market Cross....

Coventry Cross & Holy Trinity Spire

Cookoo Lane, Coventry

A market cross is found in towns and villages denoting a market square in a market town.  The cross photographed here (unveiled in 1976) is common in many medieval market towns.  There have been several Coventry Crosses over the years.  This one replaces the 1544 cross which stood some 100 metres away in Cross Cheaping.

These two photographs were taken on different days.  I had an afterthought and thought it would be good to show the a wider picture of the area. The Gladiator grave memorial is on the other side of the path (on the left).
