For the first time ever I have seen Tootsie Rolls at a regular grocery store. Hooray!!!
Asda (owned by Walmart), Walsgrave, Coventry |
You can sometimes find small speciality shops selling American candy (at a price that makes you wonder if purchasing a return ticket to USA is better value). Well, today at one of Coventry's largest supermarkets I found something new amongst the Hershey's and Reese's....a favourite...Tootsie Rolls. When you are an American living in England that calls for a photo for your blog (as well as small purchase). What you see is about 1/10th of very long shelves dedicated to the sweet tooth. Those candy bars are called 'sweets' over here. Quaint :).
Tomorrow is the first day of the Ryder Cup golf tournament (USA vs Europe) taking place in Chicago, USA. I plan to be glued to the TV for the duration (eating Tootsie Rolls) hoping that Europe retain the Cup. (I know, I can hardly believe that I said that.) Try and watch some of it, people. A great tournament!

OMG - haven't had one of those in years! Great find for an expat in Britain.
I"m afraid of Tootsie Rolls now that I have a crown on my back tooth! Yikes!!

I'm glad to see Tootsie Rolls, but so sorry to see Walmart.
yay for the tootsie rolls! we always end up with a bunch in the kids halloween stash! sorry to see walmart invading over there though too :/
So happy, Paul! Indeed a great find.
Know exactly what you are saying, Virginia. I am very carefully...don't want to pull my teeth out...ha ha!
No worries re a Walmart invasion, Petrea and Tanya. They bought the Asda chain to get the rights to 'George' clothes which they sell in USA. That's it. The bonus for me is that they stock some American goodies from time to time and Asda is unchanged. I couldn't be happier. Another big chain store here is linked with Target...so we get 'Cheroke' clothes here...great kids stuff for the grandkids.
I have my eye on that big jar for Halloween, Tanya :).
I was just wondering where you found Tootsie Rolls, and well, here we are! Pretty amazing that the chain store there has expanded to American candy. Also amazing photo given the usually-dreary indoor shop lighting - you managed to make it look so inviting!
Thank you! That's a relief!
What a fun photo. The nice people at my mail place always have tootsie rolls. Now that I realize what a delicacy they are, I'll definitely appreciate them more!!
When I was working I used to bring back a bag of Tootsie Rolls for the office. They went down well. Sees Candies too! Oh how I wish they sold Sees here too!
