City Daily Photo Theme Day - Revolution

Revolution - The Wheel

City Daily Photo Theme Day for this month is 'Revolution'.  

Since Coventry (England) is the birthplace of the

British cycle and motor industry,
the wheel seems a good choice for my theme day photo.

Cycles were first built in Coventry in 1868
 at The Coventry Machinist Company (a sewing machine company). 

The British motor industry was born in Coventry in 1897.

Photographs were taken at the Coventry Transport Museum 

where you can also see the 'first ever bicycle' made in Germany (below), and

the largest British collection of motor cars, commercial vehicles, cycles and motorcycles -

and it is free!

The Chapel of Christ In Gethsemane

Coventry Cathedral

This photograph is taken from the corridor outside this beautiful chapel.

The sign below explains more about the inspiration and design.

I am in the midst of a little blogging break but I

couldn't help share this beautiful chapel located inside 

Coventry Cathedral.

Benchmark

Council House, Coventry

(constructed 1913 - 1917)

I noticed this mark in the sandstone at the front of Coventry's

Council House and for ages thought it was a stonemason's mark or signature.

I was wrong.

Turns out that this is a 'benchmark'. If you follow the

link, you will probably understand better than I

what this surveyor's mark is all about.

Coventry Pubs #2 - The Rocket

Warwick Road, Coventry

Unfortunately, this public house is now closed and

boarded up.  It is located next to Coventry Railway Station.

I thought I had better get a photo, in case it is demolished.

The train in the sign is the Stephenson's Rocket.

Look UP!

Art Deco skylight in

former home of  the Coventry Technical College, The Butts.

Part of the building is now a 

Premier Inn hotel and to the rear is The Albany Theatre.

The skylight above is in the foyer outside

the entrance to the theatre.

This building opened in 1935 as a college

and was opened by the Duke of York who later

became King George VI.

Boundary Marker

Brinklow Road, Coventry

This is an example of the cast iron markers that can

be found around the City.  This one denotes

the 1932 boundary extension.

Above we are looking west heading into Coventry and

below we are looking south heading towards 

Coombe Country Park and Brinklow village.

I think another series of photos is in order

(if I can find more of these markers).

Old Coventry Cathedral Ruins

Stained Glass

Today is City Daily Photo Theme Day and the topic for today is 'Aging'.

I decided to share something that has aged well.

These are pieces of stained glass that date back to 

15th Century. Much of Coventry Cathedral was destroyed in

World War II, but these pieces of glass survived and are on 

view in the Cathedral ruins.

The Charred Cross

Old Coventry Cathedral Ruins

As you can see, The Charred Cross in the Old Cathedral is 

a replica.  The actual cross is kept inside the 

New Cathedral (below) for safekeeping.

I visited here yesterday and found

this quiet spot right at the back of the

Cathedral where The Charred Cross is displayed

and Books of Remembrance can be found nearby.

Coventry Pubs #1 - The Rainbow Inn

Allesley Village, Coventry

'Serving Ales Since 1680'.  My goodness me!

Coventry has plenty of pubs (also known as public houses or

licensed premises).  Many have closed over recent years.  So

now seems a good time to start photographing what is left.

I'll add more to this series from time to time.
